Vintage 70s Hopi Carved LRG 20 Hemis Kachina Doll by David Philips Made in USA. For your consideration is this fantastic hand carved Hemis kachina doll by Hopi master carver David Phillips. This sensational doll features a handmade carving out of genuine cottonwood root and hand painted with brilliant colors made from natural vegetation off the reservation. The doll represents the Hemis Kachina, who appears at the Home-Going. Ceremony in late summer (July). He is originally from Jemez Pueblo, where he is an important figure in bringing rain prior to harvest. He is the Katsina who brings the grown corn to the people, ensuring a good harvest. It is a rather large doll due to the size of his tablita, which is crowned with feathers and corn tassels. He wears a green wool yarn (spruce) ruff around his neck and carries it in his hand. He has yarn around his chest which is decorated with friendship signs, and he has yarn tied on his wrist and knee. A painted red felt sash wraps his waist and down his right side. This spectacular doll was carved by Hopi artist David Phillips in the early 1970s. It stands at about 20 tall. Hallmarked by the Hopi artisan. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
