Douglas Etsitty is a Navajo smith who specializes in Sterling bracelets which show a repeated stampwork which is intended to create an eye-dazzling effect. He comes from a long line of noted and acclaimed family of silversmiths. This is a classic style of Navajo bracelet which is done with relatively light-gauge silver. The reason for using lighter material is to keep down the cost and create a bracelet which is both lightweight and has good flex so that its size can be adjusted. At the same time, the Sterling is bent to create a convex surface and bending the silver in this way increases its tensile strength and makes it more durable and much less prone to damage. Convex bracelets are comfortable and ride the wrist very well because the two edges of the cuff create lines of contact with the wrist and allow the bracelet to fit relatively loosely without flopping around. Because the inside of the bracelet is concave, such bracelets also allow air to reach the wrist and, therefore, do not cause undue perspiration in spite of their greater width. Whether you keep such a bracelet polished to a high shine which it is now, or “let it go” and allow the tarnish to creep up out of the stampwork and overtake the surface, it will look great over time and be extremely comfortable. By using a polishing cloth you can maintain the shine, but dont use liquid polish because it will leave residue in the stamp work. A jeweler’s cloth or old t-shirt should do the trick. This has a good amount of flex to it already and there’s some “give” in putting it on and taking it off–and that’s no problem and normal. Hallmarked “Douglas Etsitty” and stamped “Sterling” near the terminal. It measures 2 1/4 across and weighs 26.1 grms. Uniform width of cuff: 3/4″ Terminal to terminal outside circumference: 6 1/4″ Gap: 1″ Total inside circumference (not including gap) 5 7/8″ This bracelet can easily be adjusted in size by 1/4 or more. I absolutely love this artist’s work. I have had and seen many of his pieces that are just so stunningly beautiful. Up for sale is a vintage southwest concho belt. It measures 40 1/2 including the belt buckle. The belt is 3/4 wide. There are 15 silver conchos. They each measure 1 3/8 ” x 1 1/8 “. They are all made out of silver quarters that have been hammered out. They have to date before 1964. I tried to take a photo of one of the conchos that says’IN GOD WE TRUST on the back. You can see it in the 2 last photos. There is 1 concho that looks different from the others. You can see it in the second photo above the belt hole. The belt buckle measures 2 1/8 x 1 3/4. It The entire belt with conchos weighs 169. The one concho that I removed weighs 6.4 grams. A modern quarter weighs 5.7 grams. The extra weight comes from the copper guard on the back. All of the conchos have a ribbed edge, just like a quarter. They are all in good shape. Signed on the buckle T. Pictures are also part of the description.
