Seminole Indian Doll Cloth-Wrapped Palmetto Fiber Husk Made by Seminole Tribe23
Traditional Seminole Indian Doll Cloth-Wrapped in Palmetto Fiber Husk Made by The Seminole Indian Tribe of Florida D23. Up for sale is this unique original vintage traditional Seminole Indian Doll. Her cylindrical body is cloth-wrapped with palmetto fiber husk stuffed with cotton and a round head with beaded necklace, embroidered traditional dress and her long black hair in a ponytail. The costume is a perfect example of Native American Seminole textile work and represents an authentic traditional Seminole Womens dress. By the 1940s and 1950s, with many Seminole children attending school, young women had begun letting their hair hang loose for the first time, a real break from tradition. Pony tails, short cuts and perms were the rule in the 1950s and 1960s, in contrast to the middle-aged women who continued to wear the large hair boards, which had been stylish in their own youth. The 1960s saw some women reverting back to a severe, tightly coiled knot, positioned not on top, but on their forehead. More than just cloth-wrapped palmetto fiber husk stuffed with cotton, the Seminole Doll accurately portrays the clothing and hairstyle worn by traditional Seminole women.
