Native American Hand-Made & Painted Plains Drum / Indian Folk Art 1930s. Native American – Plains Indian painted rawhide drum. Circa 1920’s – 1940’s. Signed on the back in India ink: “INDIAN HANDMADE BY WINONA”. The flat ceremonial, pictograph style painting on the front of the drum is titled “DAWN BIRD” in India ink. Constructed with traditional rawhide on a thick, hard, stiff cardboard body, rather than wood. Maybe made during the Depression years when materials were hard to find on the Reservation. Nicely constructed and has a small but nice sound. It appears that the drum was owned by “TIM SMITH” who lightly scratched his name on either side of the birds head. Good antique condition with a darkened patina, wear and scratches, etc. This piece will be a quality addition to any collection of Native American Art and will display beautifully in any decor: Western, Southwest, Santa Fe-Taos Style, Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, Americana, Folk Art, Presidential, Eames Era, Shabby Chic, or Contemporary.
